![]() ![]() There also were engineers, electricians, carpenters and others who helped bring the ideas to life and volunteers who did things like cleaning and painting. In addition to artists and other creative types who developed more than 200 hours of narrative content, they had to enlist architects and designers to help convert the 20,000 square feet of space into the house. It took more than 200 people to construct the House of Eternal Return. The “Game of Thrones” creator purchased the building, leased it to the group and the members set about putting together the exhibit. The group pitched Martin on their idea and he agreed to help get things started. Kadlubek worked for Martin as marketing director for the Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe. The Silva Lanes bowling alley, which had been closed for about five years, turned out to be the proper venue and Kadlubek turned to his former boss, writer George R.R. Group members had ideas for a bigger, more permanent show but needed the right space to put on the kind of spectacle they envisioned. "Due Return" planted the seeds for the House of Eternal Return. “We started thinking, how could we put all this energy into this work and have it stick around?” Meow Wolf Tech Operations Director Chris Clavio said. After a three-month run at the Santa Fe Center for Contemporary Arts that drew about 25,000 visitors, members of the collective wanted more. In 2011, the group launched its most successful exhibit to that point, the Due Return, a 70-foot-long, 20-foot-wide ship with multiple rooms that visitors could explore. “And we wanted to create those weird environments.” “It started off with us wanting to put people into weird environments,” Kadlubek said. ![]() Group members began experimenting with room-size collective exhibits that eventually morphed into interactive installations. Meow Wolf was the favorite combination that came out of that drawing. When it came time to name their collective, they wrote words on slips of paper and put them into two hats. Their goal was to create art and have fun while not necessarily worrying about commercial success. It all started as a gathering of artists and other creative types who didn’t feel they fit in with the established art gallery scene in Santa Fe. If you think Meow Wolf sounds as if someone drew two random words out of a hat, that’s exactly what happened. It gives the audience a chance to be surprised.” What is the meaning of Meow Wolf? “It’s something that encourages discovery and encourages exploration. “The House of Eternal Return is an opportunity to step inside of a science-fiction novel and experience the story through immersive and interactive art,” he said. Vince Kadlubek, one of the founding members of Meow Wolf, summed it up this way. You might even find a surprise if you take a look in an upstairs toilet. Crawl through a fireplace and you could find yourself in an aquarium. The refrigerator could be a portal to an interdimensional travel agency. Opening doors (or large appliances) in this house can lead to all types of adventures. And don’t hesitate to take that path yourself. So if you happen to see someone step out of the refrigerator, for example, don’t be too surprised. Don’t be shy and keep an open mind because most things aren’t what they seem. Once you enter the house, be curious (the Seligs don’t seem to mind if you’re nosy). There has been a death in the family and the way the Seligs reacted to it has set off a strange series of events. You could peek in the windows, linger on the front porch or just go through the front door, it’s open.īut here’s a tip: Take a minute to read some of the postcards and letters in the mailbox. You enter the exhibit and face a cozy Victorian house set in Mendocino, Calif. ![]()
