On the eastern side of the common next to the fountain, there is a non-hostile Protectron named Tour bot in its pod that can be activated by a nearby "tell me more" button. The Freedom Trail also begins at Boston Common. Park Street station is in the northeastern section of the park the subway station leads to Vault 114. Surrounding locations include the Massachusetts State House to the north, the Boylston Club to the south and Prost bar in a basement to the west. Several signs warning of danger surround the common from these approaching roadways. Several roadways converge at the common, including Boylston, Tremont and Essex Streets. Swan's Pond is on the western side, complete with a pre-War swan boat and a statue. Situated south of the river in the center of downtown Boston, Boston Common is a park containing a gazebo with a bandstand and a fountain marking the start of the Freedom Trail. So far none have succeeded, and the park is filled with the remains of Swan's victims. Raiders dare each other to enter the park and return alive, or to find a way to bring down the monster which calls the park its home. This is because of Swan, an Institute test subject-turned super mutant behemoth, who has claimed the swan pond as his territory and kills anyone who approaches. īy 2287, Boston Common has become no man's land, avoided by even the most fearsome raider gangs. The Common was even merged with another public mainspace of the city, the Boston Public Garden, much to the chagrin of its groundskeeper. In the years leading up to the Great War, the Common was greatly downsized as the surrounding neighborhoods of Boston developed. Described as an idyllic park, the common was surrounded by mansions, and once featured ornate swan boats in the nearby pond before the Great War. In the year before the Revolutionary War, one thousand British soldiers camped here, and it was from here that the force marched on Lexington and Concord. It subsequently became a public park, the oldest in the country. The Common was established in 1634 as a communal grazing ground for cattle.
